Great general-purpose NAS, February 26, 2011

Been using this NAS since early 01/2011. nice product!* (See Minor Issue & 
Suggestions.)

The Good:
     Firmware updates have gone smoothly and almost about everything 
works the approach it ought to. I even have watched home video files 
wirelessly, viewed photos wirelessly, edited workplace 2010 files. 
NAS simply networked across a Cisco router to Windows XP and 
Windows seven. The free net access to the NAS conjointly works well. 
Software for the NAS put in on each competently and therefore 
the NAS works for our wants. I actually suggest you modify the RAID 
setting from one 2GB array to one 1GB drive/backup array. 
Best safety however worst performance throughout copying. 
(Reading is simply fine.) The iTunes media server works okay.

The price history of this item is like a brick being thrown off an airplane. I first bought it about $70 in July and was able to get the second one for $46 in December.
Keep in mind that that 500 GB = 500 x 1,000,000,000 bytes which is actually about 465 informational GiB. This is standard marketing practice for sellers of storage devices. I wouldn't call it deceptive, but don't be fooled into thinking that your computer will give you an actual 500 formatted GB.

The Buffalo Technology JustStore Portable Hard Drive stacks up nicely with a similar, slightly higher priced, 500GB Western Digital portable hard drive I own. I have noticed a quicker response time with the Buffalo Technology using my WDTV HD media player. I'm not impressed with the included mini USB cable though. I have had a multitude of transfer errors using the included cable. I've dealt with similar problems before using small diameter USB cables. Fortunately I have others I can use including the one that came with my WD portable hard drive. If not for this minor oversight I would give this product 4 stars. It was my main motivation for writing this review so hopefully I can help out others. I would still recommend this product. One other plus over my WD hard drive is it doesn't have a bright annoying LED light. Just a small blue one. While connected to my WDTV HD media player, the WD hard drive LED stays lit all the time even when the WDTV is in stand by. The Buffalo hard drive goes into stand by and the LED turns off.

     Though I use it for the iPod, I hear that it works well with the iPhones. Yes it did. Upon reformatting my system, this worked well with the Windows, I am pleased that it makes my work space clutter-free. The Firewire 800 interface that came along with my Dualie was not useful when my drive was docked.

    I was excited to purchase this hard drive for my Macbook Pro at a great price and it worked great right out of the box - FOR SIX MONTHS. Suddenly it was no longer being recognized by my Mac - and Utilities could not repair it. Some research online showed that many others experienced similar problems and the fault seemed to lay with the circuits utilized. Buffalo promptly responded to my first inquiry and said someone would follow up within 48 hours. . . that was over three weeks ago and still no follow up despite yet another contact with the company. A DEAD hard drive is a NO GOOD hard drive. I now need to purchase a more known, reputable product next time and I advise you to do the same!!!

1. it's biggest capability however, for 2.5" external drive with a built-in USB cable while not extra power supply needed (tested on my previous laptop, it works good, and in fact on a Desktop Computer). The built-in USB cable is quite short, however works okay (including with Front Panel USB on my Desktop that normaly alternative disk failed). Extend it with the provided extension cable, it works with back USB port however failed in Front USB. additionally the extension cable isn't reliable in my Laptop. therefore I even have to measure with the short built-in USB cable (which isn't a giant downside to me)
2. The enclosure isn't solely stunning (shiny black on one finish, and matte rubber on the opposite end) however additionally appearance and feels terribly strong/durable. it's said will handle a drop, however I don't need to check it. I lost my 1T knowledge on my previous three.5" enclosure owing to accidental drop from my Desktop laptop (about one feet from floor), and have a nightmare to recover it.
