Buffalo Technology JustStore Portable 500 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Slim Portable External Hard Drive HD-PV500U2/BK (Black)
I have bought two of these now- one for work and one for personal use. They are fast and flexible and can be formatted and partitioned like any other hard drive for us on PC and/or Macintosh. The price history of this item is like a brick being thrown off an airplane. I first bought it about $70 in July and was able to get the second one for $46 in December.
Keep in mind that that 500 GB = 500 x 1,000,000,000 bytes which is actually about 465 informational GiB. This is standard marketing practice for sellers of storage devices. I wouldn't call it deceptive, but don't be fooled into thinking that your computer will give you an actual 500 formatted GB.

Buffalo Technology MiniStation Cobalt 640GB SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive with TurboPC HD-PE640U3/BK (Black)

My backup plan includes copying all essential files from my desktop to my laptop, (2) 1-TB external drives and a portable drive as well. The importance of a portable drive cannot be emphasized enough. If a fire, flood or theft takes out your home, you're left without data.
The Buffalo 640GB portable is a great, fast drive that looks good and is small enough to go everywhere with me, either in my shoulder bag or in my pocket.
USB 3.0 is the new, faster standard, so you should be thinking about buying 3.0 from now on. And Buffalo's portable just can't be beat! No additional external power needed, either.
